Perth has a celebrated and diverse music scene that has produced some of the world’s best bands, all of which have come from the exact same space – the rehearsal studio.
Whether it’s some poor parents’ shed, a mate’s living room or something a little more professional, every band needs a spot to hone their craft, and Perth has a lush new space in the northern suburbs to do exactly that.
Emerald Room Studios is a brand new space in Balcatta, featuring a recording suite (live room and control room) along with five dedicated rehearsal rooms.
It’s a labour of love for co-owners Josh Cuzens and Emmett Carroll, a couple of mid-20s Perth musos who decided to “have a crack” during the pandemic and set up a space they can be proud of, and begin building their own little community.
“We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into,” they tell us. “We thought we were opening a studio but that became a bit of an afterthought when we realised we would need: lawyers, surveyors, building applications/occupancy permits etc.”
But with the help of family, friends and a bit of good old fashioned elbow grease, Emerald Room Studios came to fruition over 18 months of planning during COVID and three months of hard labour, with lush-looking (and sounding) results.
“It’s surreal to see it all come together and finally be open… We just can’t wait to start our own little community filled with some amazingly talented artists we have here in Perth.”
“The ethos of Emerald Room Studios is to give Perth the quality and community that deserves, and it’s exciting to see more young people looking to make Perth a stronger music scene.”
Emerald Room Studios is located at 4/164 Balcatta Road, Balcatta, and you can find out more about room specifics and rates via their website.
