One of our top picks for CinefestOZ where it made its world premiere, Girl Like You is at long last available on a screen near you. Coming to ABC TV Plus this weekend, the compelling documentary was filmed over the course of six years and charts the changing dynamics of the relationship between Perth couple Lauren and Elle.

Set against the backdrop of the Fremantle music and arts scene, the film features a typical early 20s couple faced with extraordinary circumstances. Six months into their relationship, Elle revealed to Lauren that she wanted to medically transition from male to female – Girl Like You explores how this process affects their relationship, gender roles and sexual identities, and gives a tender, honest look into the sacrifices we make for those we love.

Having made its debut at this year’s CinefestOZ Film Festival, the film has made its international debut at the Raindance Film Festival in the UK, screening as part of the festival’s queer programming.

Produced by Cody Greenwood’s Rush Films and co-directed by talented Perth duo Samantha Marlowe and Frances Elliott, the film is West Australian inside and out. The directors said in a statement, “Girl Like You lays bare the complexities of love and of the lengths that we will go to to find it; for ourselves and one another. Bringing Elle and Lauren’s story into the social consciousness of the public has allowed us to explore the untouched subjects of love in a transgender world, in the hope of dissolving misconceptions & normalising LGBTQIA stories on screen.”

Girl Like You will screen on ABC TV Plus at 9.30pm on Sunday 7 November, Tuesday 9th November 9:30pm on the ABC, and will also be available on ABC iview.
