Last weekend saw the ICON Festival going down at Optus Stadium – two action packed games of international football played between four English Premier League clubs.
Along with Friday (Crystal Palace vs Leeds United) and Saturday (Manchester United vs Aston Villa)’s games, several fan hubs were set up around Perth and Fremantle offering fans a chance to get together over a few quite ones and meet some players past and present.
Pleasingly, despite a couple of big drawcard players being unable to make their way over for the games and the weather being legitimately atrocious, the people of Perth got around the weekend’s festivities in a big way.

While the crowd was a little smaller on the Friday night, the atmosphere was still fantastic with both teams slugging it out for a hard-fought 1-1 draw, while a capacity crowd on Saturday night saw Man Utd hold a 2-1 lead right up until the very last play.
The very last kick of the game was a corner for Aston Villa, one that saw late substitute Calum Chambers calmly knock in a header to level the game.
Despite a serious downpour just before half time, the fans spirits could not be dampened and after all was said and done it’s fair to say ICON is a welcome event on the Perth sporting calendar, the city’s keenness to get around the games in spite of shocking weather suggesting it could be a popular fixture for years to come.
