Following on from the announcement of headline show ARETHA late last year, Joondalup Festival has announced an exciting new addition for the 2024 lineup – Electric Kingdom.
This free outdoor experience invites attendees to be immersed in a glowing kingdom of animals erected at Hillarys Boat Harbour.
The installation will include an Australian-first unveiling of the “Snake-Necked Turtle”.
Created in collaboration local Nimunburr Yawuru Ballardong Noongar artist Kambarni and Boox Kid, the turtle, known as Yaakan, Booyi or Choonya in Noongar, is a ‘near-threated’ little turtle endemic to Joondalup.
Other creatures to feature at Electric Kingdom include the menacing Tiger, the mighty Falcon, roly-poly Pandas, towering Giraffes and Tarutharu the Kaurna Skink.
Some other performances to look out for at Joondalup Festival include:
- Pram People: Presented by Polyglot Theatre, this performance invites community participation through movement and connection, using the most universal of vehicles – the pram. Its made specially for for children who ride in prams and the adults that push them.
- Living Sculptures: How the Birds Got Their Colours – a captivating performance of First Nations dance by Arc Circus Co. and the Yugambeh Aboriginal Dancers
- Cabaret: An immersive performance against the backdrop of the iconic film on the big screen.
- The Lifetime of Deaf and Deafblind: Experience the troubles and triumphs of living in a silent world with Peter Blockey and Eddie Szczepanik as they share stories from their lives in Auslan, with narration by hearing actors.
