After a long wait, the redevelopment of the much-loved, 51-year-old heritage-listed Perth Concert Hall is set to begin in 2025.

Expected to cost $150.3 million, the project will restore the building’s architectural legacy while maintaining the impressive acoustics it already possesses.

This redevelopment will be the first the building has gone through since it opened in 1973, so safe to say it is due an upgrade.

There will be structural upgrades to the mid-century architecture and the concert hall will feature improved accessibility, and new spaces for events and rehearsals.

The concert hall will be closed while construction is ongoing, with an expected reopening date of early 2028.

“The Perth Concert Hall is the city’s premier orchestral music venue, and this redevelopment project will ensure it continues to be the home of music in Western Australia,” Minister for Cities Jenny McAllister said.

“After 50 years of continuous operation, the heritage-listed building will undergo a full revitalisation for the benefit of artists, audiences and the community.”

The Western Australian Government is funding $134.3 million of the total cost, $12 million is coming from the Australian Government and $4 million from the City of Perth.

“The Perth Concert Hall has been the home of orchestral music for 50 years, and this much needed rejuvenation will extend the life of this beloved venue allowing many more generations to enjoy its world-class acoustics,” Western Australian Minister for Culture and the Arts David Templeman said.

“The works are vital to safeguard the future of the iconic Perth Concert Hall building for artistic groups, performers and audiences.”

To add to the excitement, once reopened, the Perth Concert Hall will provide a long-awaited home for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO).

In the meantime, all events scheduled for the Perth Concert Hall will be relocated to different venues across the city. You can check out the venue’s What’s On schedule here.
