The State Government has just announced plans for the next stage of Perth’s transportation network, dubbed METRONET on the Swan.

Expanding Perth’s current ferry network, the $107 million plan will include two new stops at Applecross and UWA, which will link to existing stops at Elizabeth Quay and South Perth.

Additional stops at the Causeway Bridge precinct, Burswood Park, Optus Stadium and Claisebrook Cove will also be under consideration for future expansions.

Originally announced as part of the Vision for the State in February 2024, with a the WA State Election scheduled for March 2025, the confirmed project is part of the Cook Labor Government’s re-election platform.

As well as the two new stops, METRONET on the Swan will include the local manufacture of five new electric ferries, due to begin in 2025-26, with services set to commence by the end of 2027.

Operating every 20 minutes, the ferry ride between Applecross and UWA will be approximately ten minutes, with an additional 10 minutes to get to Elizabeth Quay from UWA – saving approximately 30 minutes on commutes for UWA students and staff.

“METRONET has transformed communities across our suburbs, and now we’re bringing METRONET to the Swan River,” said Premier Roger Cook.

“Just like our new METRONET trains, these electric ferries will be built right here in WA, supporting local manufacturing and helping our State become a shipbuilding hub.”

“Imagine a ten-minute ferry ride from the Raffles to UWA – it’ll be a game-changer for the suburbs along the river and provide a new way for tourists to travel to the beautiful Matilda Bay area, supporting small businesses and the local economy.”
