Gypsy Tapas enters a new era

After 20 years slinging Spanish snacks, Gypsy Tapas has entered a new era, with a newly expanded venue and a new name: Gypsy Fremantle. Following a six-month overhaul, Gypsy has transformed from an intimate 80-seat venue into a 300-guest restaurant with bustling alfresco courtyard – plus a new kitchen and bar. This means way more on offer for drinking – including 12 taps of local and craft beers, plus a new menu that updates some old favourites. And of course, there’ll still be live music from local musicians every night – a longstanding tradition that isn’t going anywhere!

Spuds at the pub

Clear your calendars: Spudfest is coming! Northbridge Irish haunt Johnny Fox’s are throwing an epic Spud Festival on Sunday, October 13 – celebrating all this potato. From 12PM to 9PM, the pub will be serving up spud-heavy menu, with potato-themed games, kids crafts, activations and more for the whole family. Plus, don your best Tony Galati (AKA Spud King) costume and you could win a year’s supply of free fries!

Ruinbar says bye for now – but not forever

Northbridge drinking hole Ruinbar will be closing their doors later this month – but it’s bye for now, not forever!

“Well, the rumours are true, our cherished and iconic venue will be closing its doors for renovations,” the venue announced in a social media post on Monday. “But don’t worry! We will be back before you know it with a brand new look and fresh vibe that we know you will love!”

“Yes, this means that Ruin Bar will be no more. However, we hope that in these new beginnings for our beloved neighbourhood bar we can build upon our offerings and our service to become even more of an integral part of the vibrant Northbridge community.”

If you want to pay them a visit before the closure, make sure to get there before their final day of trade on October 12!

We made a wine!

We’ve joined forces with lo-fi legends Local Weirdos Wine for our very own drop for the summer! Channelling the laid-back sophistication that makes Perth so damn OK, MEGA RED is fruity, flirty, funky, just a little bit fizzy and MEGA FUN – or as the Local Weirdos lads say, “Like Tony Galati, in a suit.”

Perfect for chilling with some intensely zesty notes of Pink Lady, white pepper and graphite minerality, MEGA RED features a mix of Shiraz and Cabernet grown by Garth at Vino Volta in the Swan Valley, plus Merlot and Sav Blanc grown by Alexi at Chalari Wines down in Albany.

Pick up your own bottle at the Local Weirdos website, or at your favourite local boutique bottle-o (including Besk, Copper & Oak, Mane, Freo Doctor and more). Cheers!

Kith Eatery comes to Nedlands

From the same crew as Floreat’s Some-day and Cottesloe’s Ol’ Buoy, Kith has arrived to its stylish corner on Aberdare Road. Bringing back to life an old corner deli, they’ve got a very lush fitout thanks to the team at Rezen Studio (also the brains behind Vin Populi, Gibney and La Lune). The vision is for an all-day meeting place that can cater to the community from morning coffees to (coming soon) after-work wines – and, vitally, pastries from the unparalleled Teeter Bakery.

One of Perth’s favourite bakeries opens a new outpost

Freo’s West End is a particularly picturesque part of the Port City, and we’re only too happy to find another excuse for a visit – and a brand new Common Bakery outpost is a very good reason indeed! Head there for their signature Common loaves, stellar sweet treats, their own Good Seeds coffee roasted with the folks at Mano a Mano, and a deliciously exciting new range of focaccias.

La Madonna Nera welcomes Chef Zoë Ciotta for the eighth instalment of GRANTURISMO

La Madonna Nera’s regional journey continues – and the next stop is Napoli! Curating the new menu will be guest chef Zoë Ciotta, whose esteemed career throughout the UK has seen her work with names like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Rick Stein and Angela Hartnett. Prior to this though, was the mentorship and influence of her nonno Mario, a chef from Napoli. On October 6, grab your tickets to delve into a long lunch “inspired by as much by midday lunches by the sea after a swim in the Mediterranean as a Sunday pranzo da Mario in Kingston-Upon-Thames.”

What’s better than diving into a big bowl of delicious mussels? A bowl of delicious mussels that just doesn’t end! Kailis Bros Leederville are making dreams into reality for Perth’s mollusc lovers with a new Bottomless Mussels offering every Tuesday. Grab your tickets here.

A cult-fave cinny scroll spot is popping up in Bayswater from this Saturday!

Purveyors of the Little Treat Lifestyle (TM), Smidge Bakery have built a fervent following since starting at the end of 2023 down their little Maylands laneway – in no small part because of their already cult-status cinny scrolls. Their sudden closure at the start of September caused hearts all over Perth to break, but we have great news: they’re coming back! Every weekend until October 27, they’ll be popping up at Bayswater coffee roasters Timely – so you can get your hands on those famous baked treats, signature Smidge Bakery coffee blend, merch and more!

FOUND finds itself two new locations

FOUND. emerged in 2022 with a bang – announcing their role in one of the most-talked about projects of the last few years, an ambitious brewery at East Perth’s Girls School redevelopment that aimed to bring the regional experience to the inner city. After that ambitious project was put on hold indefinitely, they set up shop at their leafy Byford brewpub – and now, they’re expanding even further with a new pop-up in Maylands that opened earlier in the month, and a brewpub coming soon to Subi.

Open Friday, Saturday, and Sundays from 12 noon to late, FOUND. FRIENDS in Maylands will showcase not only the brewery’s own bevvies, but a range of curated cocktails, wines and spirits plus some of the crew’s favourite beers from around Australia and New Zealand. (Like what you’ve drunk? Grab a 950mL squeeler or 1.89L growler of FOUND’s brews to take home!)

The Subi brewpub have taken over the former Golden West site on Hay Street, giving the venue and its 15-hectolitre brewery an upgrade before opening later in the year.

Goodbye Barchetta, hello Magic Apple

Following the announcement that Kailis Hospitality Group (The Shorehouse, Island Market Trigg among others) had won the tender for the sought-after Barchetta site on Marine Parade, George Kailis has revealed his plans for the beachfront Cottesloe location – and he’ll be bringing back long-lost wholefood brand Magic Apple. Originating in the ’70s, the cafés were known for their mantra of “mindful nourishment” – and its latest iteration will follow in the OG’s footsteps, championing nutritious whole foods. The design for the site was unveiled earlier this week, created with Dubai-based interior design studio Stickman Tribe.

“Imagine a place that looks and feels you’re in a treehouse, with an interior aesthetic to match,” explained Stickman Tribe Founder and Creative Director, Marcos Cain.

“The interior will showcase the sustainable food concept while celebrating the simplicity of untouched wholefoods, working in unison with raw materiality.”

“We are very excited the see the redevelopment of such an landmark site come to life,” added Kailis.

“Part of Magic Apple’s DNA is this 70s and 80s theme resonating back to the early days of the brand and the various cultures that existed around the wholefoods movement of the period. Call it slightly hippie-esq, we were influenced by so much from old record label typography, wellbeing / spiritual graphics and posters, 70s psychedelia to linocut stamps – that the design brief was clear from the outset.”

“We’ve more than doubled our original budget for the project as we’ve unravelled more of what the site was capable of and the opportunity to create something very special here. The result is a speculator restaurant and something that we feel will be a Cottesloe icon for decades to come”.
