Record Coffee Roasters: Canned coffee from Margaret River inspired by music, sustainability

Margaret River has long been lauded for its wines and produce. It’s local cafes, however, have also developed a strong following among locals and visitors thanks to their fine-tuned coffee making exploits.
But behind all those coffee machines that constantly churn out caffeine laden beverages for early rising surfers, hardworking wine makers and casual sippers, there’s good quality beans doing much of the heavy lifting.
The region has several quality roasteries to boast about, and joining that cohort is Record Coffee Roasters, bringing with them a point of difference with their ethos and packaging.

Founded and run by local husband and wife team Ross and Kiandra Buchanen, Record Coffee Roasters might be new, but they’re certainly not inexperienced. Bringing with them a knowledge of the craft when relocating to WA’s South West, they’ve also established a purpose and motivation for launching their Cowaramup-based coffee brand into market.
“After shutting down our previous Coffee Roastery in the Eastern States and moving to the South West, we struggled to find something locally that truly spoke to us. So, we thought, why not us? We want to offer a premium coffee experience that champions the hard work of the producers and supports environmental and social sustainability from bean to cup,” the duo explains, adding, “The South West is blessed with some of the very best wineries, breweries and restaurants in Australia and we want to offer coffee of the same calibre.”

For Ross and Kiandra, coffee from socially and environmentally responsible farms, producers and importers is at the core of what they do, with an emphasis on leaning into the ethos of the South West as a wine region.
“We focus exclusively on high grade arabica coffee. Our roastery values transparency and we encourage customers to learn about the farm their coffee comes from and the careful roasting process that highlights the unique characteristics of each bean.
“We’re excited by the diversity of flavour found in coffee and want to share it. We like the idea of exploring the world of coffee like wine – with its distinct regional profiles, and varietal profiles.”

And while their name, branding and ranging are inspired by the old school world of vinyl – ‘Inspired by the timeless allure of music and the joy of shared experiences’ – the duo also has an eye to the future, packaging their freshly roasted beans in recyclable aluminium cans, with no plastics or paper used in the packaging process.
The sleek, 200g vessels are ideal for retaining freshness and they more easily store and stack, making transport more economical. It may seem an unconventional move, but Record Coffee Roasters believes it’s better for your beans and better for the environment.
