Late last year Screen Australia and Screenwest announced that Daisy Ridley, one of the leads in the most recent Star Wars sequels, is headed to Western Australia to star in a new horror film, We Bury The Dead.

Written and directed by Perth’s own Zak Hilditch (These Final Hours), the film is set to shoot around the Great Southern region of WA, and follows Ridley’s character, “a desperate woman whose husband is missing in the aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment.”

Hilditch’s debut film These Final Hours was shot in Perth, and since then the up-and-coming director has crafted two features for Netflix: Rattlesnake and the Stephen King adaptation, 1922.

Filming for We Bury The Dead is set to commence next month and the producers, from WA-based production house The Penguin Empire in conjunction with Campfire Studios, are still on the hunt for extras to join the film.

The project received funding from Screen Australia, Screenwest, Lotterywest, the WA Regional Screen Fund and Gramercy Park Media, with NEON and UTA Independent Film Group launching international and US sales respectively, and Umbrella Entertainment distributing the film theatrically in Australia.

“We are delighted to support this compelling project featuring the talents of Daisy Ridley with director Zak Hilditch, which will provide a dark and powerful cinematic journey,” Screen Australia Head of Content Grainne Brunsdon said at the time of Ridley’s casting announcement.

We Bury the Dead promises a fresh take on the zombie/horror genre and plenty of gut-wrenching thrills for audiences, whilst delving deep into the world of loss, grief and the undead.”
