George Kambosos Jr set to fight Vasily Lomanchenko for the vacant Lightweight title in Perth on May 12
Lightweight boxer George ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos is set to bring another world title fight to Australia, as he is reportedly set to take on Ukraine’s Vasiliy Lomachenko for the vacant IBF Lightweight Championship in Perth on May 12.
Kambosos, current IBO lightweight champion and former IBF, WBO, WBO and The Ring champion, had a series of world title fights in Australia in 2022, when he lost his titles to Devin Haney in June, then failed to recapture them in October in Melbourne.
Kambosos was originally expected to face Lomachenko on those dates, however Russia’s invasion of Ukraine resulted in Lomachenko instead opting to stay in his home country.
Since those losses, Kambosos captured the IBO lightweight title when defeated Maxi Hughes in June in the US, and now has his eyes set on recapturing the IBF title.
Kambosos will stand across from Lomachenko, a two-time Olympic gold medallist and former multi- weight class world champion, who is entering this bout following his controversial loss to Haney in May 2023.

Since these fights, Haney has moved up in weight, leaving the titles vacant, and giving Kambosos and Lomachenko an opportunity to regain world championship gold.
The pair’s clash is rumoured to be held at RAC Arena, the 15,000-capacity venue being no stranger to world championship fights, as UFC featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski looked to claim the lightweight title in the same building in February last year.
The event will be held on Sunday 12 May, during the afternoon in Australia, allowing for a Saturday night main event for American audiences.
The undercard is set to feature Australian boxing twins Jason and Andrew Moloney. Jason Moloney is the reigning and defending WBO bantamweight champion, fresh off a successful title defence last Saturday.
