It just seems Perth can’t get enough of European football – fresh off the AC Milan vs AS Roma game a couple of weeks ago, the WA Government announced the ‘Perth International Football Cup’ over the weekend.

As part of the competition, Women’s Super League (WSL) teams Manchester City, West Ham United, and Leicester City, as well as Paris Saint-Germain from France’s top women’s league, Division 1 Féminine, will play a week-long exhibition tournament in Perth in August and September.

It also means there’s a good chance we’ll see some Matildas back in live action, with the likes of Mary Fowler, Alanna Kennedy, Mackenzie Arnold, Katrina Gorry, Clare Hunt and Courtney Nevin among the current players for those teams.

They’ll be coming fresh off a (hopefully successful) 2024 Paris Olympics campaign.

“Hosting these events clearly has tremendous value for the WA community as we’ve seen registrations in women’s football reach record highs since last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup,” said Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman.

“It’s fantastic to be welcoming these world-class teams to Perth, and hosting them in world-class stadiums, as we foster the next generation of football superstars.”

As part of the tournament, each team will play two matches, with the winners playing off in a final, including mid-week games at HBF Park, before finals double header at Optus Stadium on the weekend.

There will also be heaps of engagement activities around the event in a “week-long festival of football”.
