Gear up – a massive new motorsport arena is set to open to the public this weekend in Albany.

On Saturday 27 July the Albany Motorsport Park will officially open at its 200-hectare site in Drome, 20km outside of Albany.

Motorcross riders will be able to grip it and rip it on the brand new 2.4km clay and sand track fit with ski, tabletop and step-up jumps.

Alongside that there is a four-wheel-drive track, a timing tower, pits and a clubhouse which has a kitchen, canteen, offices and a first aid centre.

“This is something we’ve been working on for a long time, to actually build a world-class facility and look forward to seeing a lot of the families, juniors and adults come and enjoy it — that’s what it’s all about,” said Great Southern Motorplex Group chairman Mark O’Keefe speaking to The West Australian.

The multi-stage development will host regular weekend events as well as state and national titles, all while becoming home to many different clubs incorporating National level Motorsport facilities.

There is more to come too, with the next stage of construction to feature another 3.25km track fit for superbikes and supercars.

This development will be a big benefit to the community of Albany and surrounding areas according to mayor Greg Stocks.

“It reflects our commitment to supporting local clubs and promoting community engagement, sport, and recreation whilst providing a safe and controlled environment for enthusiasts of all ages,” he said.

“The city thanks the Australian Government, Western Australian Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the Great Southern Development Commission and Great Southern Motorplex Group for their significant support of this important project.”

At the official ribbon cutting ceremony this weekend, several fortunate riders will be testing out the track for the very first time.

Albany Motorcross Club are holding a member’s practice day once the track is opened, and they have also opened up places to non-members.

Spaces are limited due to the ribbon cutting ceremony taking precedence, however a ride park day held later in the year for anyone wanting to experience the new track.
