Licensed Western Australian pubs and bars can apply for longer trading hours to screen matches in the upcoming 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The WA Government announced the news earlier today, which comes after a similar relaxation of late night trading rules came in for last year’s FIFA Men’s World Cup.

The 2023 Rugby World Cup is being played in France this year from September 8-October 28, and venues are encouraged to apply for the extended permit as soon as possible.

“This is a game-changer for licensed venues,” said Racing and Gaming Minister Reece Whitby.

“Many of these matches will be played late at night or in the early hours of the morning. This allows flexibility and gives sports fans the opportunity to come together and enjoy the hospitality.”

Approved venues will be allowed to trade until 30 minutes after a match finishes (provide they continue the live broadcast during the extended trade period), with fees calculated based on the number of people expected at a licensed venue across the schedule, capped at $1245.50.

“Supporting your national side is always better with family and friends,” said Mr Whitby.

“This licence allows fans to gather at venues, away from quiet suburban streets, to cheer and not impact their neighbours.”
