So many West Aussies have snagged a win on the lotto, however so many more have felt the impact of Lotterywest on communities across our state.

In the last financial year alone, Lotterywest has given over $373million in various grants, and it is all thanks to you, the people of WA, playing the lotto.

In our Dream State series we have been looking into these grants and how they have helped so many West Aussies, and this week we’re looking at Ability WA.

Ability WA is a not-for-profit disability service provider that has been supporting those who need it in WA for 70 years, and Lotterywest has been supporting Ability WA for decades.

And most recently, this year’s $929,564 grant has helped to create a fit-for-purpose space for people with disabilities to access services in Perth.

One of three opening this year, the new South Hub at Murdoch Square is designed to provide a wide range of services, including an interactive house and home environment to help users develop skills to live independently.

“It’s beautiful – the lighting is fantastic, we’ve got fabulous clinic rooms, an accessible gymnasium, and an interactive kitchen where people can really develop their life skills,” says Ability WA Chief Executive Officer, Jacquie Thomson.

Ability WA’s work is vital for supporting people living with Cerebral Palsy, Autism and other physical and intellectual disabilities.

Finette, who has been bringing her son Ezra to Ability WA for almost five years, says he’s really been enjoying the new space.

“There’s a lot more room for all the people that need therapies. There’s more for Ezra to achieve his goals with, he’s excited, he’s happy, he’s going great.”

With new sites coming soon to Wanneroo and Yanchep, Thomson says it’s the folks playing lotto who have much to be proud of.

“I’d love to say thank you to Lotterywest, and want to say a really big thank you to the players – it’s those players who provide the support necessary to help us be the best we can be for people with disabilities in Western Australia.”
