Remember your first fish taco? And when you had it you wondered why the heck you hadn’t been consuming such a wonderful delicacy on a more regular basis?

Fish tacos can become an obsession, and the never-ending search to find the perfect, most delicious fish taco is a journey worth going on.

A true joy for the taste buds, we encourage you to go forth and find the perfect fish taco, and here’s 10 places that offer options that sure do come close:

El Publico

Perennial Highgate fave El Publico have been doing Mexican food right for years, with a diverse menu from street corn-sized snacks to major meat grills and of course, fantastic tequila. Their battered fish taco with cabbage, red chilli and secret weapon – mango – is part of why they remain one of the originals, and the bests.

511 Beaufort St, Highgate

El Grotto

This rowdy Mexican bar/music joint has been bringing the swing to the Scarborough beachfront since 2015, and their food options have been helping patrons party way into the night since day dot. Their taco selection is terrific, and its hard to go past the simplicity of their beautiful Baja Fish taco.

5/148 The Esplanade, Scarborough

La Cholita

Many bars have come and gone from the Northbirdge precinct over the years, but La Cholita has held it down since 2011 with saucy sangrias, mesmerising mescal options and of course, tacos. Their taco varieties are bountiful and what they lack in size, they make up for in price and taste – just ask their take on the Baja Fish.

279 William St, Northbridge

Fish Boss

Having honed their craft in the Fish Boss food truck over the years, Fish Boss now reside across three fixed locations in Perth. And trust us when we say you haven’t lived until you’ve inhaled a couple of their big Boss Tacos. Fresh battered fish, smoked corn puree, slaw and chipotle mayo combine with the crunchifying MVP – fried black beans.

789 Albany Hwy, East Victoria Park
Yagan Square, Perth

Piggy Food Co

This North Fremantle joint takes inspo from slightly north of the border, with their So Cal-inspired take on cuisine a popular one in the area. Their whole menu is stacked, and ridiculously priced, but their baby snapper/tomato salsa/smoked chipotle mayo fish tacos take the cake.

229A Queen Victoria St, North Fremantle

Grand Lane Fish House

Okay we already gave these guys a shout in our wrap of Perth’s best fish and chips, but this inner city joint gets another high five for their tacos. The two soft flour tortillas with battered hake, homemade slaw with charred sweetcorn and criracha chilli garlic mayo fish tacos go a long way to explaining why they’re a CBD must eat at.

Behind, 135 Barrack St, Perth

Mix

Korean food delivered the Mexican way is the ethos of MIX on Hay Street in the CBD, and they deliver it in spades. The menu is customisable, with burrito, taco and bowl options, and their gluten free fish tacos are a winner. Plus if you like things extra warm, ramp it up with their Cucumber or Roasted salsa.

211/580 Hay St, Perth

Clancy’s Fish Pub

WA has trusted Clancy’s for all fish-related taste for over three decades, so it makes sense they know their way around a fish taco. Each pub has their own version (with Canning Bridge doing prawns), but it’s hard to go past City Beach’s crumbed whiting filling…

903 Canning Hwy, Applecross
195 Challenger Parade, City Beach
51 Cantonment St, Fremantle

Twin Fin

New kid on the Freo block, Twin Fin, has only been operating for a few months now, but they definitely know their way around a fish and frothy combo. Their grilled fish and burger options are great, but it’s hard to go past their 3 big boi fish tacos, chased down with a refresh Single Fin.

8/47 Mews Rd, Fremantle

Eat No Evil

Alright so Eat No Evil might not have a fixed location (yet, check out on Facebook Le Cabana), but it’s well worth tracking down their food truck for their fried fish tacos. With Dashi Mayo and Sambal Matah, it’s a full-blown flavour explosion in your mouth.
