On the CBD’s doorstep, West Perth is adept at blending business with pleasure. While there’s a bustling business of local office workers, it also makes for a fantastic inner-city weekend away. We’ve found our favourite spots to explore the next time you’re in the wild west, from luscious Italian meals in a heritage hotel to ultra-cool record stores and breakfast tacos with a side of b-ball.

Holiday Inn West Perth

First of all, you’ll need somewhere to set up camp for your weekend. Holiday Inn’s West Perth hotel opened its doors at the end of 2021, with refreshed rooms and amenities to suit everyone – whether you’re visiting for business, a romantic staycay, or a family-friendly getaway. Kids under 12 can even stay in your room and eat for free, any time of the day. The  Holiday Inn West Perth also offers free bike hire for their guests, an excellent way to get around West Perth – for example, cycling down to Kings Park for a lovely picnic!

Donnie Taco

If you’re visiting on a weekday, you can get invigorated with a visit to Donnie Taco. Facing the leafy surrounds of Kings Park, this café and taquería is dishing up some coffees and brekkie tacos that’ll get you going – that is, if the basketball half court doesn’t already do it.

Kings Park

After your brekkie taco, hop across the street to Kings Park. Although it’s hardly a secret spot, our huge inner-city park (one of the world’s largest!) is always worth a visit, whether you’re exploring the Botanic Gardens, weaving your way up the Kokoda Trail or just taking in the amazing vistas over the city skyline while enjoying a picnic. Pro tip: Julio’s offers delicious picnic hamper packs for this exact occasion!

Scitech

If you’ve got the whole family with you, head to Scitech for some educational fun. Open since 1988, the centre is packed with interactive and engaging STEM activities for kids of all ages – plus, it’s home to the southern hemisphere’s largest planetarium. You can even get there for free via the CAT bus, as well as all the way into the CBD and East Perth!

Julio’s

Situated in the 1902 historical home at the front of the Holiday Inn West Perth, Julio’s brings heritage charm alongside delectable, comforting Italian fare showcasing local produce and paired perfectly with a selection of local and Italian wines. And make sure you get there for their daily happy hour specials on the alfresco – a spritz is best enjoyed in the afternoon sunshine, after all. Otherwise you can check out their new seasonal menu launching on April 20 and some live music on Friday nights (commencing in May). Finally, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t indulge in a couple of their famous Baci Bombolinis:

The Regal Theatre

Finally if you’re really wanting to make a night of things, what’s more natural following a delicious dinner than a spectacular show? And The Regal Theatre’s stunning art deco vibes are one of the most beautiful places to do exactly that, located in the heart of Subiaco. After a couple of years of fits and starts due to the pandemic, The Regal is back firing on all cylinders in 2022, with a stacked lineup of comedy, dance, musical, cabaret, plays and more – check what’s coming up here.

Mount Street Breakfast Bar

Wake up bright and early, and ready to tackle Jacob’s Ladder… Or, perhaps just a short jaunt down to Mount Street Breakfast Bar for some Turkish eggs. Those eggos are pretty legendary on their own, but sitting on their leafy balcony with a coffee (and a slice of their homemade cakes) is always tempting.

Good Vibrations Record Store

From Mount Street, it’s only a quick stroll across the footbridge and you’re in the CBD – or, you can wander down Hay Street and pick up a record or two from Good Vibrations. Owned by a seasoned collector, they’ve got a tidy selection of pre-loved vinyl – although their main focus is on supporting and promoting local artists. Local stock is even sold on zero commission, so you can feel good about supporting local musicians.

Cavania

Just down the road from Good Vibrations, Cavania will have not just your wardrobe looking fresh as a daisy – but your house, too! This boho boutique is jam packed with easy-breezy fashion and homewares that will have you feeling like you’re at the beach, plus they share the space with sister café Gather on Hay (pictured below), so you can leave with a coffee and baked treat as well as a new outfit.

Gangemi’s Fine Wine & Foods

Take a bottle home to remember your stay – and if anyone knows a thing or two about fine wine, it’s Gangemi’s. Founded in 1911, they’re experts in all things drinkable and stock a delightful range of both local and international tipples.

Gordon Street Garage

Gordon Street Garage has long been a favourite of Perth diners, and for good reason. From morning coffees to long lunches and romantic dinners, the relaxed menu showcases local produce. 2021 also saw the expansion of a nifty garden bar – which is the perfect spot to enjoy a crisp glass of vino as the sun sets, by the way.

From Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger to City Beach, adidas, Bonds and loads more – leave the 6005 looking as fresh as when you walked in.
