An Article by Perth Based wine blogger @lo_fi_wine

So we have all been super responsible with our minimal skin contact for close to a month now. It’s been really difficult to watch our bustling community grind to a halt while we protect ourselves against the spread. As an emergency doctor it has been inspiring to see everyone behave so responsibly throughout this period and I’m incredibly proud of our little state for limiting community transmission.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom, as with most periods of austerity and hardship throughout human history we have begun to adapt and change our behaviours. Small businesses have begun to diversify their offerings to survive this little peri-apocalyptic event. This has led to the modern day revolution of our favourite spots delivering to home, for cheap, in a contactless and responsible manner so that you can help keep them afloat and distract yourself from watching Tiger King for the fourth time.

Below is a list of the best Natural Wine delivery services that Perth has to offer. Some new businesses have been birthed as a result of our current circumstances, while some of our favourites have diversified into painless online delivery and some spots have just always delivered and we were none the wiser. So dive in! Order some Booze! For the first time in human history we can save humanity by sitting on the couch and sinking some natties – don’t f#ck this up!

In no particular order….!

Heroes and Comrades

One of the more luxurious experiences that can be enjoyed this global catastrophe is having wine hand delivered to your door by Will Schofield and Chris Masten, the boys from Heroes and Comrades and a little known AFL team the West Coast Eagles.

These lads offer a delicious and inexpensive range of wines that would usually be going straight to restaurants. This helps smaller producers maintain some income while their restaurant trade has decreased. Will and Chris believe in offering fairly priced wines that taste great and come from small-batch, local producers.

Monday-Friday next day delivery on orders before 11:59pm
$10 delivery fee to have Masto or Schoey bring them to your door.

1800-WINES

1800-WINES got started as a direct response to the pandemic, with an emphasis on supporting winemakers who have been acutely impacted. Currently stocking two primo Western Australian producers, Si Vintners and Sam Vinciullo, their goal is to support small producers, and soon importers, who they know are struggling with the current climate.

It’s their mission to only work with winemakers that they have a direct relationship with, so that they can ensure their wines have been farmed and made with true minimal intervention principles at heart.

They currently offer twin packs, mixed three packs, and of course magnums.

Free same day delivery on orders over $80 in the Perth Metro Area.
2pm cut off for same day delivery.

Balthazar

If you were a fan of Balthazar’s dark and indulgent dungeon vibes before you developed buboes (sorry I was running out of plagues, look this up at your own risk) then their online store is for you.

Sporting over 300 different wines on their list and impeccable cellar conditions, Dan and Emma are hand-selecting 3-packs to deliver. They’ve really enjoyed this new process, and are loving being able to make more personalised recommendations as they get to know their customers better.

Free delivery to Perth metro area, 2pm cut off for same day delivery.

Mane Liquor

Mane Liquor is a venerated stalwart of the local and international beer community. Unbeknownst to some they also have a fantastic range of natty wine from all over this great country. Old Bridge has been killing it in North Freo for years now. It’s a family owned store with a massive selection and a personal touch. They’ve created some great pandemic-restriction-compliant 3-packs that have been hand-selected by their team. If you need something to fill up your days instead of Animal Crossing and cardio then their Virtual Blind Tasting ‘Corona Sessions’ service they’ve been organising week-on week-off with King Somm might be right up your alley.

$5 delivery to local suburbs. $50 minimum order.

King Somm

King Somm have been operating out of Bayswater for a little over a year now. They sport a well curated list of wines and sling some awesome pies made by Ben Atkinson (of Meat Candy fame)!

In response to the state of emergency they’re offering a pizza wine special for $40, which sees a pizza from their menu paired with the wine of the day. These wines normally retail at about $30-40 so at this price it’s an absolute steal.

They also have some great deals on hand-curated mystery 3-packs and have been involved in organising the ‘Corona Sessions’ with Old Bridge Cellars mentioned above.

Takeaway and delivery Wednesday to Sunday 4:30-8:30pm
Free delivery to local suburbs, $7 delivery to non-local.

…and introducing!

Commune Wine Store

Opening in the coming months in Maylands, Commune Wine Store promises to offer something new for the Perth wine community. With all of their front-of-house staff being certified sommeliers or winemakers, they hope to demystify wine and return to its roots, where wine was the preferred drink of the average Joe.

They hope to offer some of Perth’s most competitive prices as they feel this is often the first barrier to people enjoying good wine more broadly. They also plan to run educational classes and free tastings on Fridays and Saturdays when we are all able to rub shoulders and raise a glass again.

~Upon opening~
Free same day delivery to Maylands and immediately adjacent suburbs, 5pm cut off.
$5 next day delivery to non-local suburbs.
Free delivery on online orders over $99 all over Australia.
