There was a time, not that long ago, when buying a home was pretty much all about how quickly you could get into the CBD. Gotta get into that high-rise office building nice and early, right? Money never sleeps, baby!

With more and more people opting to work remotely, it’s becoming less important to be close to the city – and more important to be close to what you love. And what could beat the Perth Hills’ gloriously green, lush surrounds? (And you’re not too far away if you need to get to the occasional, unavoidable meeting in the CBD).

If you’re itching for a tree change, have a squiz at some of these Perth Hills suburbs we’ve profiled with the help of our friends at reiwa.com*. Whether you’re downsizing, upsizing or just getting out of the big smoke, the hills have plenty of properties up for grabs.

Kalamunda

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city… But you still want to be within easy reach of excellent coffee and brunch spots? Well, Kalamunda has both tranquility and excellent eats on lock. As well as some cafés good enough to draw crowds from afar, you’ll also be able to hit up one of Perth’s best farmers markets every week – and The Cheese Shop’s delicious wares are worth the move alone. If the cheese wasn’t enough to entice you – you’re just a stone’s throw from Mundy Regional Park and Lesmurdie Falls National Park, where you’ll find natural wonders like Whistlepipe Gully and of course, one of the Hills’ most impressive waterfalls: Lesmurdie.

Zig Zag Hill

Mundaring

While Mundaring is the furthest from Perth of this list, the vibrant town is the heart of the Hills – with so many delightful local businesses within easy reach, you’ll hardly have to leave. As well as Mundaring’s local businesses, there’s a lot to explore in the outdoors. Circling Mundaring, the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail traverses 41km of quaint towns, scenic views and historical tidbits.

Mundaring is situated on the northern side of Beelu National Park: there are heaps of trails through the park that show off the impressive natural surrounds, as well as WA’s own “Scheme of Madness”, Mundaring Weir. These trails include a section of the Bibbulmun Track, plus some rather speccy picnic spots. Mundaring is also the northern terminus of the Munda Biddi cycle trail – if you like adventuring in the outdoors, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Glen Forrest

Nestled between Darlington and Mundaring, the north border of Glen Forrest is shared with the 2700 hectare John Forrest National Park – the first national park designated in WA, and only the second in the whole country! If you like waterfalls and wildflowers, you’ll be in absolute heaven – in winter and spring, the park boasts plenty of both. While it’s right next to Darlington, Glen Forrest’s median house price is considerably lower than its neighbours.

Darlington

We look at our fair share of quirky, cute houses here at Perth Is OK! – and more often than not, they’re in Darlington! From expansive family homes to cosy cottages… If you want a taste of it all, Darlington really ticks a lot of boxes. With the charming village vibes of Mundaring and Kalamunda (and its own delightful cafés, like The Little Nook and The Hive), amazing views that rival Gooseberry Hill and plenty of trails to explore, it’s a knockout on just about every front.

Zig Zag Scenic Drive is known as one of Perth’s most spectacular views – but what if that was on your doorstep? Gooseberry Hill’s quiet cul-de-sacs are some of the Hills’ most sought-after spots, with breathtaking views across the Darling Scarp. Hike to Rocky Pool and take in the wonderful wildflowers, wildlife and tranquil surrounds of the Kalamunda National Park, which is practically your backyard.
