Sitting on the outskirts of the Perth CBD lies North Perth, which boasts a truly vibrant cafe culture drawing in locals far and wide. The Angove Street hub is full of delicious options, plus there’s a few equally awesome options around the suburb’s outskirts you should definitely seek out. Here’s a few of our faves.

Stomp Coffee

Tucked away on Angove Street, Stomp Coffee is the perfect morning-after cure following a night out. With the adjoining wonders of Angove Street Collective and a hefty dose of dog-spotting available, you can’t go past their leafy green courtyard – easily one of the best in town. Their Sunday live jazz sessions are an absolute treat.

Satchmo

Possibly the most charming of the lot, Satchmo is the pride of North Perth. Fitted out with decor reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film set, this cute little cafe serves up unique Jewish and New Orleans flavours, along with some of the best bagels in Perth. One simple glance of their menu is quick to reveal this as their specialty; we recommend The Cheeseburger Bagel and The Mississippi Special for fried chicken lovers.

La Mortazza

La Mortazza is well worth venturing further up Fitzgerald Street – you’ll be well-rewarded with a selection of Italian treats that would put any nonna to shame. Fluffy bomba filled with pistachio or Biscoff, decadent tubs of tiramisu and ultra-crisp cannoli filled with creamy ricotta (and make sure to get an espresso on the side). For savoury-lovers, there’s plenty on offer, from sumptuous pastas to cheeky paninis.

Hank’s Corner Café

Taking over a corner of a motorcycle repair shop, Hank’s has to take the cake for perhaps our favourite revitalisation of an under-utilised space. The delightful coffee window and café is perched happily on the corner of Scarborough Beach Road, keeping locals fuelled with delicious coffee and bites like the ooey, gooey, decadent Welsh rarebit.

The Old Laundry

While we’re rather partial to a cheeky wine in the Old Laundry’s courtyard, during daylight hours we certainly don’t mind popping in for brunch, too. They’ve recently had a nip and tuck to their fit out but they’ve kept all of their quirky charm – along with a roster of breakfast dishes that’ll start your day off right.

Blake Hill

Taking over what was once the beloved Blake Street Merchant back in 2021, Blake Hill have more than just maintained the good vibes. Their breakfast menu is stacked with twists on popular favourites – think your choice between classic, “French” or “Italian” style smashed avo, or chilli crab scramble topped with sambal-infused hollandaise.

Angove Kitchen & Espresso Bar

Just a few doors up, Angove Kitchen are bringing the goods from 6:30 in the morning, with crowd-pleasing brekkie classics on deck, including heaps of vegetarian options for the plant-loving (or perhaps just more virtuous on a Saturday morning) among us.

Postmaster Coffee

While we were sad to hear of the closure of hidden neighbourhood spot Prodigal Son, we were consoled to learn of the opening of Postmaster in the same location within the former North Perth post office. Stop by for excellent coffees perched outside in the sunshine, fresh nonna and zia-baked treats (what a treat, indeed!), and plenty of pats of passing pooches.

Chinta

There’s no denying, Chinta is a feast for both your tastebuds and your eyes. Apart from its incredulously beautiful and zen setting, this cafe stands out with its incredible Asian fusion dishes. If you feel like kicking it up a notch, their exquisite high tea caters to all with vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan selections on the menu. If you’re looking to fulfil your tea party dreams while impressing your fellow brunch-goers, we recommend this as the perfect solution.

milkd & CO.

Featuring a variety of mouth-watering dishes and brilliant coffee to match, milkd & CO is a must-try if you’re in the area. Be welcomed in by their modern, industrial interior and simply go to town with their many food options. Buttermilk pancakes, sweet pastries, shakshuka, eggs benedict and salads – you name it, and they’ve got it.

Hobart Deli

One of those best kept local secrets that’s always busy, Hobart Deli has been doing breakfast right a little away from the main Angove drag for just on 10 years now. What their menu lacks in size it more than makes up in freshness, organic produce and healthiness – just watch out for that Brioche French Toast, it’ll get ya.

Engine Room Espresso

If you’re chasing a quick and easy brekky that’ll rev you right up, drive straight into Engine Room Espresso. Featuring a delicious array of bagels courtesy of The Holy Bagel Co, along with some tempting toasties, no one does the bread and beans combo like Engine Room. While it’s not a big “dine-in” place per se, there’s still plenty of space to pull up and read the paper while you wait, with a little doggo chill area out the back.

Eggspot

On a rough morning, an egg sandwich will always hit the spot – but we could weep with joy to behold an Eggspot sandwich. Eggspot has been dishing up their signature fluffy egg sandwiches from Freo Markets for years, creating hangover-blasting combinations like pulled pork, crispy fried chicken, hash brown stack and even a big breakfast sandwich – and now northsiders can get in on the action at their Angove Street location.

Dolcetto Patisserie

Sweet tooths we haven’t forgotten about you, and we’ll round this list out with a couple of the finest patisseries around Perth, let alone just the north. Dolcetto is one of Perth’s go-tos when it comes to catering desserts, and a slice of one of their beautiful cakes will leave you no question as to why. Traditional Italian pastries, best enjoyed with equal care-given coffees – their giant cannolis have no rival!

3/400 Fitzgerald Street, North Perth

Dolce & Salato

Not to be discounted in the sweet treats department, nearby Dolce & Salato have their dessert and cake game equally on lock, but also double as a beaut spot to pop in for breakfast or lunch, with a stacked all day menu. Their secret weapon here is the tasty, traditional Italian style pizzas, with maybeeee a sneaky gelato to top it off?
