Perth’s Best Taco Spots
If your hands aren’t holding tacos, you’re putting them to waste. Here’s our favourite spots to rectify that situation.
el Público
Beaufort Street stalwart el Público has been dishing up some of the most legit tacos in Perth for yonks. And boy oh boy, are they worth writing home about. Diablo chicken with peanut brittle, beef with pickled cucumber and jalapeño… just make sure you leave enough room for a side of mogo mogo. Muy bien!
511 Beaufort Street, Highgate
La Cabaña
From the man behind one of our all time favourite food trucks, Eat No Evil, La Cabaña soared into our hearts and our summers from the get-go. We can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon than soaking up the sunshine and good vibes in that coastal courtyard. Taco in one hand, cocktail in the other, pooch by our side… bliss. With most of the menu dairy, gluten and nut-free, plus with heaps of vegan options as well, it’s the perfect spot for a big group of mates.
400 South Terrace, South Fremantle
Al Pastor Taqueria & Tequila Bar
Fear not Fremantle fans, there is tequila to be downed and Al Pastor Taqueria in the Sunshine Harvester Works has it in spades. Opening earlier this year and from the team behind RoyAl’s, they’ve made sure to put as much love and attention into their tacos and tequila as they have done burgers, with some crazy specials on most nights as well.
1 James St, Fremantle
Piggy Food Co.
If you’re looking for tacos, it would be easy to look past Piggy Food Co. – it’s not strictly a Mexican restaurant, or a taqueria, but then again, what’s in a name? They’ve got tacos! We want them! Hand pressed corn tortillas filled with your choice of pulled pork, chicken, halloumi, fried avocado, battered snapper or tiger prawns. They’ve also got a monster selection of craft beers on tap to delight even the snobbiest beer nerd.
229A Queen Victoria Street, North Fremantle
La Cholita
Another stalwart for Mexican in Perth, La Cholita can be credited with getting the masses on board with beef tongue tacos – ‘cause those bad boys are hella good. But if you’re not into tongue, it’s almost tempting to go pescatarian for the ultra crispy Baja fish tacos. Pair that with a jug of Paloma (tequila, lime, grapefruit, sea salt), and you’re most of the way to a killer Friday night.
279 William Street, Northbridge
El Grotto
We’ve already talked about how much we love El Grotto for a beachside night out, but a jug of sangria in the sunshine with a few tacos in hand is always a dream. Choose from their range of meat and vegan options, or grab a few pals for their DIY tacos: 40 dollarydoos for a platter of mushroom, pork or beef with all the fixings and 12 warm tortillas.
5/148 The Esplanade, Scarborough
Tizoc Taqueria
The team behind Malena’s Kitchen – a beloved market staple selling tamales, mole, salsa and more Mexican deliciousness – have focused their attention into Tizoc Taqueria. Having popped up at Perth City Farm for the past month, they’ve already built a loyal following off the back of their stellar tacos. Just remember to BYO the cerveza!
1 City Farm Place, Perth (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights)
Caballitos
High falutin’ fine dining, this is not. We don’t wanna say entering Caballitos is like descending into a den of iniquity, but there’s also a pole in the middle of their “Chapel of Sin”, so read into that what you will. And if these tacos are wrong, we don’t want to be right. A choice of pork, beans, chicken or beef: this is straightforward, taco goodness. Why complicate a good thing?
26 Queen Street (basement level), Perth
Donnie Taco
Tacos and a basketball? Talk about a perfect weekend hang. Get a few mates together for some tacos or a Cuban sandwich and a half court game in the sunshine. Just make sure you’ve got enough for 3×3 and you’re set.
66 Kings Park Road, West Perth
Don Birria
If there’s one thing that Perth loves, it’s a pop-up. And if there’s one thing we’re into right now, it’s birria tacos. Don Birria knows what’s up, with succulent, tender meats, stacked on tacos jam-packed with flavour, are grilled to perfection. Long gone are those crumbling, flavourless tacos of our youth – and we couldn’t be more relieved.
Big Don’s Smoked Meats
And if we’re talking pop-ups, there’s nary a pop-up more fervently beloved than Big Don’s. As well as his legendary American barbecue, he’s nailed the taco game with some practically pornographic birria and barbacoa tacos. Our mouths are watering just thinking about it.
